START SEEDLINGS

What every beginner should know

WHAT DO I NEED?

Seeds, dirt and something to put them in. As mention in how to Get Started, you can use multiple different house hold items to start seedings if you don't have the tray. The toilet paper and paper towel cardboard rolls are pretty effective when it's time to transplant. With those , all you have to do is put them in some dirt for them to grow. The cardboard acts as mulch and compost in your soil, it will break down and feed the soil. If you have they trays or similar container, you'll need to make sure the roots are properly formed which should take about a month of two. It's pretty exciting to pull the seedlings out of the tray and see roots all over the bottom.

HOW TO CHOOSE SEEDS FOR SEEDLINGS?

Not every seed you have is made for transplanting. Some are best for direct sowing in the soil. Most packets have a little doodle at the back with recommendations on how to plant the seeds, be sure to check that before you start planting. A few that are great for seedling starter trays are tomato, lettuce, cabbage, okra, peppers, eggplant, cucumber, marigolds (to attract pollinators) and many others. We've found that carrots, cilantro, beets, peas, radish and a some others don't really like being transplanted so we prefer to do those direct in the soil.

Time to get a little dirty. Put down the gloves, trust me there is something magical when you work directly with the soil. That's all, let's get to work!
